What Is Bronze Milling

Bronze milling is a cutting process that removes material from the surface of a work piece. The cutter, commonly known as a milling cutter is a rotary cutting tool. Unlike drilling, where the tool is advanced along its rotation axis, the cutter in bronze milling is usually moved perpendicular to its axis. As the milling cutter removes material the work piece, the cutting edges known as “flutes” or “teeth” of the tool repeatedly cut into and exit from the material, creating shavings or chips from the work piece with each pass. The milling process removes bronze material by repeatedly performing many small cuts.

There are two major types of milling process: face milling and peripheral milling. Face milling is when the cutting action occurs primarily at the end corners of the milling cutter. Face milling is used to cut flat surfaces known as faces into the bronze, or to cut flat-bottomed cavities out of the bronze. Peripheral milling on the other hand differs in that the cutting action occurs primarily along the circumference of the cutter. Peripheral bronze milling is best used for the cutting of deep slots, threads, and gear teeth.
